GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- At the conference hall of the University of Palestine in the Gaza Strip, 11 local speakers shared their inspirational stories and experiences in various fields, from technology to entertainment. The Sept. 24 event was part of the TEDx program, a global activity that aims to create a platform for people to share their creative and innovative ideas with an audience.

TED has been seeking to expand worldwide and has been granting licenses since 2006 to universities and institutions around the world to host independently run events. So far, more than 130 countries have hosted TEDx events.

The University of Palestine held its first TEDx event on Sept. 24. The university's administration said in a statement on its website that the event aims to spread inspirational ideas and that TEDx is a "local, self-organized event that brings people together to share a TED-like experience."

Esraa Yaseen, the coordinator of the TEDx Palestine event, told Al-Monitor, “In the Gaza Strip, there are a lot of creative people with inspiring ideas who need global platforms to express themselves. Their ideas can change the stereotypical image of Gaza that is based on death, destruction and poverty. [The talks] can shed light on the new image of Gaza and prove that Gazans have ideas and capacities and can be part of such global events.”

“We want to deliver a message to the world that Gaza — which was devastated by three Israeli wars and by the ongoing blockade and whose residents still suffer pain, deprivation and unemployment — is embracing visionaries and people with innovative and distinctive ideas,” she said.

Yaseen added, “My team and I worked with the management of TEDGlobal via email, and we presented a proposal to organize the TEDx University of Palestine in Gaza to introduce our new ideas and share our experiences, and we were granted permission to do so. The local event was dubbed TEDx University of Palestine since it was set to be hosted by [our university].”

She explained that choosing the speakers for the event took a great deal of time. They first screened candidates during the workshops they held to introduce the public in the Gaza Strip to the concepts of TED and TEDx, and then a jury from among the faculty and the administration was formed to select presenters based on their innovative ideas and their ability to address and engage with an audience.

On Sept. 24, the presenters took to the stage to share their ideas and talk about their experiences.

The 11 speakers covered a variety of topics, which were received by the audience with laughter, tears and sometimes shock, or by a standing ovation.

Journalist Mumin Qreiqei, 29, sat on the stage in his wheelchair telling the audience how he lost his legs while covering the Gaza war in 2008-2009, and how he continues to work as a journalist documenting the crimes of Israel against the Palestinians.

He said, “We do not need feet to make our dreams come true. All we need is courage. After I lost my legs, I took the decision to follow my dreams with a strong will and determination. I followed my passion for journalism and my desire to document the crimes of Israel and expose them to the world. Creativity is not limited by circumstances.”

Qreiqei, who presently freelances as a photojournalist for a number of international news agencies, told the audience that his camera is his girlfriend and his life companion, and that it has been with him ever since his injury.

Salah al-Saadi, 35, talked about the first scientific laboratory in Gaza City, which he launched in 2016 and called the Golden Lab, for recycling environmental waste and using the recycled output to preserve the environment.

He said, “Ideas can be materialized thanks to ambition and perseverance. My project was a small idea that I had about 10 years ago. My friends used to make fun of me when I talked about how I wanted to preserve the environment by recycling waste, but I turned a deaf ear to their comments. I achieved my ambition by insisting on success, and my project came to light a year ago.”

Saadi gathered interesting scientific information and materials on recycling waste and using the recycled products to preserve the environment and to conduct experiments that could be applied in the future in Gaza. He stressed that he is determined to achieve his ambitions and goals.

Another speaker, Hiba Shaheen, talked about her experience as the first female equestrian in the Middle East with a prosthetic foot. Shaheen, 17, has only one leg as she was born with a rare birth defect. Some call her the “horse-riding prodigy.”

“Sorrow is a fruit. God does not make it grow on limbs too weak to bear it,” she said, as she began her talk. “I challenged my disability and wanted to change society's perception of disabled persons. Thanks to my determination I proved to the world that a disability does not need to stand in the way of creativity.” (source)

GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- China is developing a large family of robots for both its crewed and uncrewed space programs, according to a senior official with the country's space agency.

Professor Tian Yulong, secretary-general of the China National Space Administration, told state media at a major symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Automation in Space in Beijing that the country is drawing up a long-term plan for the development of space robots.

"They will consist of Mars rovers, asteroid explorers, robotic arms and service robots that can help maintain and repair an in-orbit space station, space laboratories and satellites," Tian said.

China will make its first independent attempt to send an unmanned probe to orbit and land on Mars in 2020, and also has ambitious outlines to return samples from asteroids and other deep space missions.

That plans are being made for robotics to support these missions suggests the projects are likely to go forward in the 2020s.

China's Chang'e-4 lunar mission, which will attempt the world's first landing on the far side of the Moon in 2018, is one project that will benefit from the developments sooner.

"I think the robotics technology is priority for our project. We developed some new technologies in moon surface detecting," Tian said, adding that, "more efforts will be made to develop advanced robots with higher automation to meet the needs of our deep-space exploration programs".

Gianfranco Visentin, head of the automation and robotics section of the European Space Research and Technology Centre, said the European space community is actively cooperating with China and the two sides are enhancing collaboration in space robotics and lunar exploration, China Daily reported.
GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- In the year 1952, the Mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz discovered the tomb of King Pacal inside the Temple of Inscriptions of Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico. This region was once protected by a number of logs placed in a defensive and fortified way around the temples of Palenque. At the entrance of the temple there were a total of 620 inscriptions near the tomb of King Pacal who, according to the symbols, was born in Palenque, started ruling over the Mayan empire when he was 12 years old and remained in power for a total of 65 years before his death at the age of 80. One of the curiosities is that the Temple of Pacal is the only pyramid in the new world where a crypt was found, defining the pyramid as a burial place just like the ancient Egyptians.

The tomb weight reached the 20 tons and it was build better than the entrance stone that was removed before the findings, which make archeologist believes that the temple was constructed after the crypt was put in place.

One of the most important aspects of the crypt was the cover stone. It weighted 5 tons and it have an inscription on top that, according to the first archeologist who studied, show the representation of the decent of King Pacal to the underworld and the Mayan believe of the three worlds: the heavens or world above, the world of the living and the world of the dead. Other archeologist interpreted the hieroglyphics as describing the presence of the monster from the deeps of the earth, the Mayan sacred tree and the hairs of the god of rain, but it was the third interpretation and the study of the remains that caused one of the greatest controversies on the world of archeology.
GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- Scientists have discovered an unexpected mineral in a rock sample at Gale Crater on Mars, a finding that may alter our understanding of how the planet evolved.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, has been exploring sedimentary rocks within Gale Crater since landing in August 2012. In July 2015, on Sol 1060 (the number of Martian days since landing), the rover collected powder drilled from rock at a location named "Buckskin." Analyzing data from an X-ray diffraction instrument on the rover that identifies minerals, scientists detected significant amounts of a silica mineral called tridymite.
GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- The worldwide parkour phenomena has hit every corner of the globe in one way or another. For those unfamiliar with parkour, it basically entails moving from one place to another as quickly as possible and typically involves plenty of running, jumping and flipping around. Well it now seems as if the craze has appeared in the Palestinian coastal enclave of Gaza Strip in a big way.

A group of young Palestinians recently took to the streets with a kitted out silver BMW 3-Series and filmed some absolutely mind boggling acrobatic stunts with the car.

As the Bimmer speeds and drifts around the sunny Gazan roads, the kids can be seen doing back flips, hand stands and all sorts of insane moves on the car. Check it out.
GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- Repairing cars in the Gulf, a Palestinian mechanic from the Gaza Strip once spotted a vehicle that took his breath away.

It was a classic: a Mercedes Gazelle. Munir Shindi knew that he had to have one. So, after returning home to Gaza, he set about building a replica of the 1927 model of the two-door, open-top roadster from scratch.

Cannibalizing parts from used vehicles and importing a few items such as locks, hub caps and hinges from the United States, Shindi, 36, spent nearly two years shaping his masterpiece. It's now on display in his mechanic's shop.

"I wanted to prove to myself that I can make it and that nothing was impossible," he said.

Off-white with burgundy seats, the replica is built on a Mitsubishi chassis and powered by a 1,600 cc Mitsubishi engine. It drew admiring glances and cheers from motorists and pedestrians as Shindi, accompanied by two of his sons, took a rare drive down a main Gaza street on Sunday.

"I am still waiting for the authorities to allow me to license it so I can drive it properly," he said.

Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the lightweight Gazelle series helped Mercedes dominate motorsport in the late 1920s and early 1930s. According to classic car websites, about 300 Gazelles were produced, and one unrestored model sold for $7.4 million in 2004.

Palestinians in Gaza, territory controlled by the Hamas Islamist group, import cars from around the world via neighboring Israel. There are about 70,000 registered cars in the small, densely populated enclave of 1.95 million people.
GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- “I have decided to move from the great expanse of the universe to a small pocket of land on earth,” says the well-known Palestinian astrophysicist and NASA scientist Professor Suleiman Baraka.

In early 2016 he left America, where he worked at the NASA space agency, and returned to the blockaded coastal enclave of Gaza, saying he always felt a magnetic pull calling him to return home.

As a child, he had a passion and wonder for physics. “It's something that I've always been very interested in, contemplating how and why things happen,” he says.

He got his Bachelor's degree in Gaza in 1978, then his Masters degree, and thereafter was offered a place on a PhD study programme in France.

Later, he moved to work in the US, at Virginia Tech, with the NASA space agency.

“That was a turning point in my life - in the life of any young man - to work with an organisation that has developed, and is developing, some of the most extraordinary modern-day visions with a real capacity to change history,” he says, as he sits in his office, making use of what little electrical power he has between blackouts, to transmit his data to his scientific colleagues abroad.

He recalls the first time one of his American professors nicknamed him the “PLO guy,” making light of the fact that some Israeli classmates expressed dissatisfaction about having a Palestinian in their midst. Now, Baraka jokes about it.

“That night the American security agencies contacted my supervisor because there were pro-Israelis who said their children didn't feel secure with a Palestinian in class who they feared might blow everyone up!” he said.

“Of course, this is a stereotype which has no meaning, and we as Arabs should not accept this,” he told MEE with a smile and a shake of his head.

However, his American scientist colleagues recognised his abilities as an astrophysicist and researcher, specialising in the magnetosphere that surrounds the earth. Dr David Sibeck, NASA’s mission scientist for the THEMIS space weather project, said: “Dr Baraka represents exactly the kind of researcher suited for research on space-age projects: energetic, ever curious, able to communicate with both the general public and the specialist.

"His talents lie in using numerical simulations to predict phenomena that can be confirmed with NASA’s spacecraft observations. As such, he embodies the best in the long tradition of rigorous intellectual inquiry dating from the times when the Arabs were the leaders in preserving and enhancing our understanding of the world around us.”

The successful career of this 51-year-old scientist in the world outside Gaza took a horrific turn after he lost his 11-year-old son in an Israeli air strike in 2008. He knew he would eventually have to come home to Gaza.

In late December 2008, he was sitting in his US office at NASA in Hampton, Virginia when he heard about the bombs targeting eastern Khan Younis, and moments later he learned that his family home had been hit in an Israeli airstrike. After approximately 10 hours, incommunicado with his family, he knew his son, Ibrahim, had died.

“There was always a debate inside my head, tossing around the thought that the missile which hit my son could have been developed by colleagues I lived and worked with on a daily basis. I couldn’t reconcile that thought,” he says.

Among Palestinians, Baraka is seen as a hero who, in conscience, left behind a prestigious job and, like the missile that killed his son, headed to Gaza, back to his homeland.

“My son was killed here,” he points out, as he walks around the house which is now surrounded by trees. All the dreams to bring his family to the US, faded away with Ibrahim’s death.

Professor Baraka is the only Palestinian from Gaza who has worked for NASA, although since the 1960s a significant number of Palestinians have worked for the space agency. It is an achievement that has been recognised with his nomination for UNESCO's first Middle East chairmanship, among other awards.

He passionately believes that Gazans should again look to the stars and learn to remaster the science of space, as he explains the long ancient history of astronomy and its historical place in the Arab world.

“If you look at the catalogues and analogs of astronomy, you will find the most prominent names are Arabic,” he says with pride about his ancient ancestors’ focus on the ancient light of the stars. “Our history is up their too.”

After years of working abroad, and finishing his work for NASA, with all of the wonderful space facilities available to him, he came home and planned to open Gaza’s first university astronomy department. However, one stumbling block was obtaining a telescope in the Gaza Strip.

“Gaza is like a concentration camp, closed off from the rest of the world and the global economy. In the USA, or UK, you can purchase a telescope from any Optics shop and simply take it home… but in blockaded Gaza, enthusiastic, intelligent students, are deprived of those rights of choice,” he says.

But Baraka has not given up on his goal of bringing space science and the universe back into local schools and university classrooms. A breakthrough came in February 2010 when, "after four months of contacts with diplomats who are friends, we were able to get our first educational telescope through which to view the stars, planets and near galaxies,” he says with a broad smile. “A telescope is an important tool through which to feel freedom and sense mobility from our tiny place on the ground.” There are now seven telescopes in Gaza.

Local hero

The first night he turned the telescope to the skies, hundreds of people - including mothers and their children - gathered around, eager to examine the stars and planets, using Gaza’s first telescope.

“I want Gaza to contribute to the knowledge production of global science,” he says, as children gaze at red Jupiter, the Milky Way, hazy Andromeda and Cassiopeia, eyes wide with amazement and curiosity.

The public further appreciated the importance of the work of Professor Baraka after his profile and vision was raised when he became UNESCO’s first Middle East chair-holder.

“Now I need to build a new infrastructure for young scientists - men and women - who want to contribute to making a difference in human civilization,” he says. “It is work, devotion, management and leadership that makes the difference,” he adds, between filing his work to his colleagues in France.

He still feels the deep pain from losing his son, the event which changed his horizons and ultimately brought him home to Gaza, leaving NASA and its technological treasures behind.

“I never forget my son. He is there among the stars, and I have enough strength to bear my loss and carry my soul forward into exploring my research.”

Part of his decision, in coming back, was to honour the school where his child, Ibrahim, was a student before the missile took his life.

“I gathered my son's former classmates together and, with the help of the telescope, took them closer to the moon. I want them to feel relief among the stars and heavens above, and to scan the skies freely,” he adds as he hugs the children and they talk about his son, recounting their favorite memories of him.

Baraka wants the children to see the beauty of the skies, beyond the fear of Israeli F16s, surveillance drones and armed Apache helicopters.

“If you truly believe that you are living in the land of prophets, then you have to be a messenger,” he says. “I have my message, and that is to establish the educational infrastructure for an astronomy in Palestine.”

“I want to teach these children peace and love - nothing else,” he says. “We must see past the drones, and reach for the stars.”
GAZA SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY -- Dabke (Arabic: دبكة) is a modern Levantine Arab folk circle dance of possible Canaanite or Phoenician origin. It is performed in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Northern Saudi Arabia.

Dabke combines circle dance and line dancing and is widely performed at weddings and other joyous occasions. The line forms from right to left. The leader of the dabke heads the line, alternating between facing the audience and the other dancers. In English, its name is also transliterated dabka, dabki, dabkeh.
In addition to 3D-printed parts, the Rutherford engine also has a completely new propulsion system, using brushless DC motors and high performance Lithium Polymer batteries to drive its turbo pumps, according to Rocket Lab. Turbopumps propel fuel into the combustion chamber of a rocket engine at the correct flow rate and pressure. Usually, pressurized gas is used to power a turbine, a process which is usually coupled to the combustion, making the inside of the engine tightly coupled.
(DPI) is working to bring their DP-14 unmanned aerial vehicle to the civil and military market. The DP-14’s shares its tandem-rotor design with Boeing’s CH-47 Chinook, the U.S. military’s manned, heavy-lifting workhorse. DPI says that their autonomous aircraft can serve a similar role by carrying cargo or even people into and out of challenging terrain.
